Misspelling God's Name

Today we have a very untalented speller. This guy was going for a simple (but very visible) Hebrew "God" tattoo. Well, this is what he got:

If you wanted to know just how bad one can misspell "God", this would be your answer. This spelling lacks the letter He, has a randomly added Ayin in the middle, and the Mem isn't in its final form. Also, completely unrelated Nikkud under the Alef.

It looks as if this guy knew how the word was supposed to sound in Hebrew, and tried to transliterate it on his own. Never a good idea! In this case even an automatic translator can do better.

I bet God is none too happy about this ridiculous treatment of his name. I sure am pissed when people misspell my name!

  1. WEll, when one knows how hard it is to translate Hebrew into English (see http://milatova.com/en/hebrew-translations), one should know better than trying to guess :-)

  2. The fellow might be British: they drop the 'H'. Like in 'herb' or 'honour'. But frankly, is it not within reason to expect a tattoo 'artist' to ask himself: 'My brother's Keeper? Me?' To be minimally responsible for the accuracy of the ink-work. Hmm.. every 'failed tattoo has a guy behind it saying "What, me worry?"

  3. I would think if I were putting something permanent on someone's body I would want it to be spelled correctly. But hey, maybe that's just me. I'm getting a laugh out of it at any rate.

  4. I think that the right leg of the ayin originally was the waw, whereas the ayin's left leg was the right leg of heh.
